I Am by Lola Brooks

I am not a score, I am more.
I am not a lesson, I am progressing
I am not failing, I am propelling
I am not a number, I am a wonder.

I am not just a person,
I am a beautiful, talented, extraordinary human being who teaches others to succeed by growing their strengths, strengthening their weaknesses, showing them love and building a friendship for life.

I Am A Teacher!

This was written on a morning when I felt anxious before I opened the door of my classroom. Teachers are on a pass/fail scale to determine what kind of Teacher they are based on their student’s scores regardless of school year (20-21), home life, income, attendance, mental health and many other factors.

We are tired of having to explain “what happened” when our scores don’t meet the district’s standards, but do show a student’s growth. We’ve watched our students grow from day 1 to day 180. We’ve seen them try when they were sick, tired, upset, happy, crying, mad, excited and sad. We are proud of them because they didn’t give up. They kept going. They failed, succeeded, grew, helped others, became stronger, trusted, and loved. They are ready. They may not have succeeded in the eyes of the district through a number, but they have succeeded as beautiful, talented, extraordinary human beings ready for their next adventure. And we are ready for them to fly.

This is a wonderful book by a wonderful Author and Teacher, Mel Jorgensen! I really enjoyed reading it myself, but I can’t wait to share it with my class! 2nd grade Teachers and up, this fits into your curriculum. You can purchase it on Amazon.

Breaking Generational Curses

I love talking with my students about their purpose! I get SO excited about reminding them that they are not a mistake. That they are wanted and important! I’m just one Teacher trying to break generational curses! It can happen! Miracles happen all the time! I love my babies!

My favorite Bible verses come from Psalm 139: 1-18. What a powerful reminder of where we came from. God knew the world needed you. He knew how important your job on this Earth is to reach and bless other people. And to introduce them to Him! Wow! You are wonderfully and beautifully made by your Heavenly Father who knows how incredible you are because He created you! #beingateacherismysuperpower

A Prayer for Teachers (and other School Personnel)

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we prepare to return to school, I pray that all Teachers know how awesome their job is. That it is our purpose and something You, O Lord, have called us to do.   That everything we do and say, a child hears and does. Help us to be mindful of that. Help us to show love where there is none. Help us to speak love where none is heard.  Help us to build relationships with our students through listening and engaging in meaningful conversations with them. Help us to build relationships with their parents through caring and sharing of their child’s day and progress.

Remind us that you are only a call away.  When we feel overwhelmed, we just say “Jesus” and you are there.  When we feel confused, frustrated, concerned, angry, “Jesus” is all we need to relay. When we feel victorious, worthy and wanted, we say “Jesus” because we are thankful and grateful of your grace and mercy.  Come into our classrooms and fill them with your presence. Come into our schools, you are welcomed!

Show us that we are not alone.  Help us find Teacher friends and colleagues that care about our welfare.  Let us join together to encourage, inspire, redirect, learn and love each other.  Lead us to you through the purpose of fulfilling Your Will in our lives and that through us many generations will flourish because we trusted and believed in you!

As this journey begins again this year, I pray that many will come to know you through our obedience in loving you Lord with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind. The first and greatest commandment and the second that is like it:  Love your neighbor as yourself, which is found in Matthew 22:37-39.

Give us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) which are the fruits of the spirit so that we may pour out what you have put inside us.  We love you and are thankful for the gifts we are given. The gift of Teaching! We will use this gift to bring glory and honor to you because nothing is impossible with God! (Luke 1:37)

In Jesus Name I pray, Amen!

Thank you, Jesus!

Amazon Wish List for Teachers

https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3W045GOYJKEUM?ref_=wl_share

I created a Wish List on Amazon for my classroom and students. As I was adding things, I was reminded as a Teacher how much we spend to make our classrooms feel safe and secure. How much we want our kids to learn and have fun. How much we want them to feel loved and meet all their needs.
As a parent, I realize that I always hated the supply lists for my girls. But there were only two of them.
PSA: A Teacher (1) always buy a class set (25+) of everything, so that every child can have and use the materials in the classroom. When you are buying school supplies this year, please consider buying extra for the Teacher! Thank you!

Sacrifices Teachers Make

Sacrifice means to give up (something important or valued) for the sake of other considerations. (Google) Teachers sacrifice every July by buying school supplies for their classrooms.  Not the pretty/handsome/colorful things (letters, borders, paper, wall hangings), they are buying paper, glue sticks, pencils, crayons, markers, kleenex, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies, paperclips, tape, staples, post-its, notebooks, pens, etc.……school supplies for 30+kids.

Teachers don’t make a lot of money and they never will.  Some people laugh when they find out I’m a Teacher because they know I make very little for doing a very intense, highly criticized job.   But I wouldn’t change it for anything. It is my purpose and I love changing the world, one kid at a time.

Anyway, with this little money, teachers all over the country are buying school supplies because it isn’t mandatory for parents to supply these for their children.  It is only suggested. We do give out supply lists in hopes that parents will supply their classroom or children with these much needed supplies. But we know that some parents cannot afford these supplies.  So we take it upon ourselves to buy them.

I have some people in my family who donate year-round school supplies to my classroom. I am very grateful for their sacrifice. This year, I ran out of glue sticks, erasers, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, paper, bandaids, sandwich bags and crayons by the last month of school.  So I had to buy these. I also buy snacks and candy to reward my students, cardstock to make certificates and bookmarks, lamination to cover them and make them last, cupcakes and juices to celebrate their birthdays and things needed to celebrate different holidays because my students matter.

Since July has begun and school supply sales are hot, please consider buying school supplies for your children and/or donating them to a school, classroom, church or a Teacher who can use them during the school year.  I know that they will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support of our children and our future! We work better together!

Faithful

Happy Father’s Day!

Last night someone reminded me that there was a time when I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life.  I couldn’t even imagine. I told them that was before I allowed God to” take over” my life and He turned it upside down.  When I “allowed” God to take over, He showed me my purpose which is to lead others to him through ways He created just for me.

God has given me a wonderful teaching career, serving at my church (Revolution Church) and two published children’s books (paperback and eBook) which serves many countries. They are on Amazon.

When you give your heart to Jesus, He will use you (in an awesome way) to lead others to Him through ways only He created just for you.

Don’t lead others to the enemy because you decide not to give your life to Jesus.  Be the example like my Dad did with his life. He went to be with Jesus June 15, 2019 at 9:50pm.  He introduced our family to Jesus, took us to church, taught us to sing for God’s glory and made sure we knew that God is our provider, comforter, healer and savior.  He gives us unconditional love, mercy and grace. He welcomes us back home, no matter where we’ve been or how long. He taught us that people are important. And no matter what, family is always family.

I am thankful for my Dad, even if I wasn’t always the best daughter.  He gave me the best gift that I have ever received: Jesus! I will forever be grateful for his gift and will re-gift it many times to everyone who will receive it.

Be faithful to the God who is faithful to you!

Appreciate A Teacher (Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10)

Show your support to a Teacher this week!

It always amazes me (now that I’m a Teacher) how one person can control 20-30 people in one room and not even think twice about walking out. PATIENCE, they say, is a virtue.  But I know that PATIENCE is a work of the HEART!

It takes a lot of PATIENCE and TOUGH LOVE to manage a classroom full of students.  Thinking back to my years as a student, I know that Teachers were respected by the school, parents and students.  I don’t remember if that made it easier or not. But I do know that now, it’s not like that. And it makes it very hard to teach.

Everyday Teachers are trying to teach, but 20-30 students with different personalities, behaviors, attitudes, home lives, influences are in the classroom today without support from the school, parents or students.  Many teachers give up, leave the profession they love, or continue knowing the outcome is bleak.

Every person on this planet has had a Teacher.  Someone who they hated or loved, someone who spoke to them or into them, someone who became a mom/dad or person they admired.  Someone who they grew up to be or wanted to be like, someone who encouraged them or pushed them harder. These Teachers still exist!  They are still in classrooms all over this world. Thank them! They make a difference everyday, in any way they can!
